Synopsis
The film addresses the many centuries-old cultural and historical heritage of the ancient rural settlement of Bovsuny in the Zhytomyr region of northern Ukraine. Some traditional handicrafts are still preserved in the village, such as weaving, carpet making and embroidery. A unique cultural tradition in the village is the folklore acapella group of local elderly women called “The Grannies of Bovsuny.”
Surprisingly, an analysis of the central motifs of these ancient songs, the local handicrafts and social mores shows many similarities between the cultural and historical heritage of this region of Ukraine (Polissia) and Islamic teaching. This unexpected perspective on an aspect of Ukrainian heritage makes us rethink the significance of ancient moral and cultural traditions and the commonalities that bind us all.
