There are at least 6,000 distinct languages in the world. About half are threatened with extinction in the near future. Languages with fewer than 100 speakers are not documented. Languages with fewer than 10,000 speakers are considered minority languages. Often these languages aren’t passed down to the next generation and eventually disappear. International Mother Language Day is held on 21 February each year to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. Nearly 130 ethnic groups currently live in the Vinnytsia region. The largest ethnic group is Ukrainian, while the largest ethnic minorities in the region are Russians, Polish, Belarusian and Jews.
