Synopsis
In 1941, construction of the Azerbaijani city of Sumgayit was suspended; it resumed only in 1944 after the Great Patriotic War , and construction was carried out by captured German soldiers (1941-1945). They ultimately built many of the streets and houses here. In the postwar period, Germans lived and worked there. On the territory of modern Sumgayit there is a cemetery where “the German founders of the Azerbaijani city” are buried. The names of many of the nearly three hundred soldiers resting in this cemetery have been stored in an archive to this day. In this video, the cemetery caretaker speaks about how she cares for graves and also how the city’s residents appreciate and remember those who had built their city. Today Sumgayit is the third largest city in Azerbaijan.
